Embodiment

While this program teaches valuable information, knowledge alone is not enough. All modules contain embodied methods for integrating knowledge and turning awareness into effective action. The Embodiment module explores:

  • Embodiment: What it means to be embodied, why it's so challenging to be embodied, and why embodiment skills are essential for breaking habits, reprogramming our patterns, and healing.
  • How to feel your feelings instead of thinking about them or using humor and other techniques to distract from uncomfortable emotions
  • Why talk therapy isn't helping people as much as it could. 
  • Dissociation: What exactly it is, why we do it, and how to regain control over our dissociative tendencies?
  • What it means to "listen to the body"
  • How intuition and emotions are messages the body sends us in the form of physical sensations
  • How to heal your relationship with your body and care for your body in ways that are sustainable for you.

The Nervous System

Understanding the Nervous System is essential for effectively breaking unhealthy cycles and implementing healthier life choices. In this module we explore:

  • The basics of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system: How the Nervous System supports us in stressful situations and soothes us when it's time to rest and digest.
  • Nervous System Regulation. What does it mean to be dysregulated? How do we regulate?
  • The role the nervous system plays in dissociation and how nervous system skills can help us come back to the body when we're dissociated.
  • Triggers: What they are and how they work
  • How the Nervous System has many tactics for keeping us safe: Fight Flight Freeze and Fawn
  • Why the body holds onto trauma and how to release stress and trauma from the body
  • The role the nervous system plays in addictive and unhealthy self-soothing behaviors. (And the role it plays in supporting us in shifting OUT of those behaviors).
  • How trauma impacts the Nervous System: An overview of PTSD and CPTSD

Emotional Proficiency 

Being a human is an emotional experience. Our actions are often driven by our emotions, and emotions like shame and guilt plague us when we act in ways we're not proud of. We were never taught in school how to feel, process, or express our emotions in a healthy way. In the emotions module we explore:

  • Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Maturity: Why some of us struggle with emotions more than others and how to improve our emotional skills
  • How to feel your feelings rather than thinking about them, why we avoid painful emotions, and how to stop avoiding and start feeling our emotions
  • How emotions and the nervous system interact with one another
  • How the brain functions when intense emotions are present in the body
  • How to communicate effectively when emotions are running high
  • How to navigate emotional dysregulation in others
  • How to remain grounded in yourself when someone is trying to manipulate your emotions

Embodied Parts Work

The Internal Family Systems framework is a foundational piece of this curriculum. IFS has liberated thousands of people from their shame and self criticism. Once we stop punishing ourselves for our patterns and behaviors, we can work to reprogram those patterns. In this module we explore:

  • The concept that we ALL have many parts of our personality, and why it sometimes feels like we're at war with ourselves.
  • How to make sense of our self destructive or unhealthy choices and behaviors without succumbing to shame or self criticism.
  • How to see through the behaviors  to understand the unhealed wounds, fears, and insecurities motivating those behaviors.
  • Understanding the true Self; The wise part of you that rests calmly amidst your inner turmoil.
  • How IFS makes sense of the divisiveness and extreme beliefs gaining popularity around the globe.
  • How the parts work paradigm will help you interact with other people and view humanity in a whole new way.

 

Pattern Reprogramming

Codependency, people pleasing, procrastination, avoidance, addiction: These are some of the many patterns my clients have worked through and shifted through this program. In this module, we explore:

  • The subconscious beliefs and fears driving our self-sabotaging patterns
  • How to use embodiment skills, nervous system skills, and parts work to shift out of old undesired patterns and into new healthier patterns
  • How neural pathways become set, trapping us in familiar patterns and how to rewire neural pathways
  • How to navigate the discomfort and unfamiliarity of changing your ways and moving forward in the world in a new way.
  • How to navigate other people's reactions to your healthy life changes
  • How to give yourself grace and compassion when you slip into old familiar ways.

Embodied Living

Embodiment doesn't just help us heal and break our patterns, it enriches and improves every moment of our lives. In this module we explore:

  • How to integrate embodiment skills in our everyday life so that embodiment becomes a way we are rather than a thing we practice on occasion.
  • How embodiment can be incorporated into daily life, from dog training to doing dishes, driving, folding laundry, cooking, navigating uncomfortable conversations, etc.
  • This module will contain watch-along videos you can listen to while moving  through day-to-day activities. Think of this a bit like having your yoga teacher with you off your yoga mat, guiding you to be embodied and present throughout your daily life.

You have access to an entire curriculum in Kajabi to help you learn and practice these skills. This curriculum can be moved through at a pace that works for you. I’m Christen Berryman, creator and founder of The Self Center and its signature program Matter Over Mind. 

10 years ago I was a spiraling college student trapped in a cycle of anxiety and depression. After months of insisting I could find a way out of the cycle on my own, I surrendered and found a therapist. She helped me gain some control over my negative and fear-based thoughts, but our sessions were not helpful enough to justify how expensive they were. I only saw this therapist 3 times, but thankfully I had signed up for a much more helpful class in college that semester: Yoga. What I thought would be basic stretching to gain an "easy A" turned out to be a practice that would change my life forever. My anxiety was so relieved by my yoga practice that I enrolled in Yoga Teacher Training right after that semester.

For 10 years I have continued with my own yoga practice and have been teaching yoga, meditation, and breathwork to groups in studios and individuals in 1:1 private sessions. I also found more affordable therapy and have been working in talk therapy alongside my yoga journey. The combination of the mental clarity gained in talk therapy with the embodied skills gained in yoga have proven to be a transformational combination. I've been using this combination of therapeutic techniques and embodied practices in my yoga classes and private sessions with amazing results, so in 2024 I decided to turn this work into a curriculum that could be accessed by more people at their own pace with me here to support them if/when needed. Hence the creation of the Matter Over Mind program.

Talk therapy is expensive and many therapists do nothing more than listen to their clients talk through their problems, which is minimally helpful. I've found that some of the most helpful tools I've learned in therapy do not require the participation of a therapist. We can accomplish a lot on our own.
