SELF CENTERED:
IT'S YOUR LIFE. WHY WOULD ANYONE ELSE BE THE MAIN CHARACTER?
The Self Center Program: A Journey Into Self
I provide the gear and the map, you walk the path.
Introducing:
The Self Center Program
A quick glance at the news is all it takes to see that our politicians are not our saviors, celebrities are not the heroes we want them to be, and even our spiritual and religious leaders are corrupt.
It's time we stop looking outside of ourselves for the truth and start relying on inner wisdom for guidance.
Learn how to show up for the world and your relationships without abandoning yourself. It's challenging to keep our hearts open in this world without being taken advantage of or burning out trying to save people from their suffering. In our journey together, we will explore how to strengthen your relationship with yourself and harness the power of your nervous system so you aren't pouring from an empty cup. You'll leave this program with confidence in a variety of skills, including:
- True Self Care: Learn how to listen to the messages your body is sending and give yourself what you need.
- Boundary Setting: Sometimes giving ourselves what we need means choosing to stop tolerating behaviors that are harmful to us, whether those behaviors are someone else's or our own. Learn to set effective boundaries with others and yourself.
- Compassion: We are so hard on ourselves. Compassion for ourselves and for others is a critical skill, but can be difficult to connect to. Learn how to cultivate compassion for yourself and others, even when it's difficult.
- Emotional Skills: Improve your ability to understand and navigate your own emotions and those of others.
- Nervous System Regulation: Master your ability to recognize when your nervous system is activated and return to calm when your peace has been disrupted.
- Embodiment: Talk therapy is great, but it rarely gives us tools for putting everything we're learning into action. This program is full of resources and activities for using what you learn to create actual changes in your life.
- Forgiveness: Release the weight of your anger. Forgive yourself and others by understanding the wounds behind the choices we make and the science of trauma.
- Behavioral Change: We all do things we know we shouldn't, but why? In this program, we get to know the thoughts and feelings behind the behaviors we're not proud of. Only through this understanding can we shift our undesirable behaviors.
- Communication: Learn how to navigate conflict and complex conversations calmly and effectively by understanding how emotions, the nervous system, and the brain work together during conflict.
It’s time to show up for yourself like never before.
Internal Family Systems
The IFS framework is a foundational piece of this curriculum. IFS is proven to alleviate shame and self criticism, which hold us back from believing we can heal (or that we deserve to). Together we'll explore:
- The idea that we each have many sides to our personality, and why it sometimes feels like we're at war with ourselves.
- How to make sense of our choices and behaviors we don't like without succumbing to shame or self criticism.
- How to see through the behaviors of others to understand the unhealed wounds motivating those behaviors.
- Understanding the true Self; The wise part of you that rests calmly amidst your inner turmoil.
- How IFS makes sense of the divisiveness and extreme beliefs gaining popularity around the globe.
The Nervous System
Understanding the Nervous System is essential for healing emotional and psychological wounds and for maintaining overall wellbeing. We'll explore:
- How the Nervous System supports us in stressful situations and soothes us when it's time to rest and digest.
- Nervous System Regulation. What does it mean to be dysregulated? How do we regulate?
- Dissociation
- Triggers: What they are and how they work
- How the Nervous System has many tactics for keeping us safe: Fight Flight Freeze and Fawn
- Why the body holds onto trauma and how to release stress and trauma from the body
- The role the nervous system plays in addictive and unhealthy self-soothing behaviors.
- How trauma impacts the Nervous System: An overview of PTSD and CPTSD
Emotional Skills
Being a human is an emotional experience. People feel and express emotions differently, which often creates or intensifies conflict. We'll explore:
- Emotional Intelligence and Emotional Maturity: Why some of us struggle with emotions more than others and how to improve our emotional skills
- How emotions and the nervous system interact with one another
- How the brain functions when intense emotions are present in the body
- Communicating well when emotions are running high
- How to navigate emotional dysregulation in others
- How to remain grounded in yourself when someone is trying to manipulate your emotions
Embodiment
Think of embodiment as the opposite of dissociation. When we are embodied, we are present in our full sensory experience. We'll explore:
- Embodiment: What does it mean to be embodied, why it matters, and how the body's intelligence helps us put our intellectual knowledge to good use.
- Somatics: Why the body is such an important part of healing and what somatic therapies are.
- Why so many people feel like talk therapy isn't helping them.
- Dissociation: What is it, why do we do it, and how do we regain control over our dissociative tendencies?
- What it means to "listen to the body"
- How intuition and emotions are messages the body sends us in the form of phyisical sensations
- How to heal your relationship with your body and care for your body in ways that work for you.
Boundaries
In this cultural moment, boundaries have become a popular topic, but they're not common sense. Together we'll explore what boundaries are and how to set them properly:
- What are boundaries? How do we set them calmly? Can we do it wrong?
- How to properly uphold boundaries so they are actually effective
- How to navigate backlash to boundaries you do set
- How people pleasing and conflict avoidance are hurting you and your relationships and how to recover from these patterns
- How to balance giving and receiving in your relationships
- How boundaries can actually strengthen and create closeness in your relationships
- How to use your anger and other emotions to identify what boundaries you need to set in your life
- The importance of Self-validation and how to Self-validate
- How to love others without feeling responsible for their emotions or circumstances (letting people learn their own lessons.)
- The difference between an enmeshed relationship and a close relstionship
Therapy
The Self Center Program is a great place to start your healing journey and can be used alongside therapy, but shouldn't replace therapy if you can access it! Starting therapy can be awkward and confusing, and there isn't much guidance for moving through the therapy process. Together we'll explore:
- How to decide if it's time for you to seek the support of a therapist
- How to go about finding the right therapist for you
- How to make the most out of your therapy sessions
- Helpful questions to ask your therapist
- How to identify that a therapist is NOT a good fit for you
- The many types of therapy out there that are not talk therapy, and how to decide which types of therapy might be helpful for you.

HI, I'M CHRISTEN.
I’m Christen Berryman, creator and founder of The Self Center. I received a Bachelor’s Degree in WGSS from The Ohio State University in 2015. In my program I focused my studies on systemic oppression, racism, classism, and the way our intersecting identities impact our lives. Studying humanity at its worst and opening my eyes to the rampant suffering and injustice of the world was heavy, and I had no tools for managing that emotional intensity at the time. Approaching my final semester, I was running on fumes and having multiple panic attacks a week. I told my advisor I wasn't sure I could make it through another semester. What she said changed the trajectory of my life: “Why don’t you take a yoga class this semester?”
I enrolled in a semester of yoga and started working with a therapist at the same time. The combination of those two tools put my healing journey in the fast lane.
I made it through that semester thanks to yoga and therapy, and after graduating immediately applied for a 200 hour yoga teacher training.
I began teaching immediately upon becoming certified and have been teaching yoga for over 9 years now. I have also continued working on myself in therapy and furthering my studies on trauma, the nervous system, and somatics. Because of my own background, my programs and classes are designed to utilize the tools offered by therapy and somatic practices so students can learn and turn their knowledge into real change. All healing is self healing: I share the tools and teach how to use them, my clients do the work.
After thousands of hours of teaching, I focused my work into 1:1 private sessions. These sessions combine ancient wisdom and modern science so my clients have as many tools as possible in their toolbox as they navigate the complexity of human life. I have mined all my methods of self healing for the jewels they provide. Rather than finding these pieces on a scavenger hunt of sorts, my students have access to them all in one place.
I am thrilled to share these practices with even more people by bringing my work online. The Self Center is an online community which gathers people committed to growth and the pursuit of wisdom, healing, and peace. Here, not only will you gain the support of a like-minded community, you'll also have access to a wide variety of practices which guide you to the wisest, most confident version of yourself.
I am a voracious researcher and lifelong learner. Members of my community and participants can trust that they are receiving the most up-to-date information and techniques to help them grow and heal - spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically. I also embody these practices myself, so all that I share is backed by my lived experiences and practices. I practice what I preach. The Self Center is a bit like DIY therapy with an expert offering guidance, education, tools, and support. I also understand that everyone's experience is different, so I offer a variety of approaches to healing so everyone can follow what feels best to them at any point in their journey.
You're here for a reason.
