About
Your
Teacher

I’m Christen Berryman. I’ve been teaching yoga for 10 years with a special interest in teaching yoga to beginners and people with injury or limited mobility who need to modify their yoga practice and move with care.

I first experienced yoga as a teenager when my best friend invited me to a hot yoga class. I was completely out of my element, had never heard of any of the poses, most definitely did not know how to do any of them, and frantically scanned the room the entire time trying to understand how to do the poses correctly. Ultimately I stopped going because my shoulders were in too much pain from flailing my body through the poses without knowing how to do them properly. I didn’t return to yoga for another 5 years.

My true introduction to yoga came in college. Going into the last semester of my senior year, my mental health was in a tailspin. I had been trapped in a constant state of anxiety for over a year and was having panic attacks almost daily. My advisor suggested I take a yoga class and I figured stretching was an easy way to gain a credit, so I added it to my schedule. After the very first class, I walked out able to breathe deeper and easier than I had been able to in over a year. I didn’t understand why or how, but I knew yoga was relieving my anxiety. After that semester-long class, my panic attacks reduced to almost zero. Without hesitation, I applied for yoga teacher training right after graduating.

As a beginner to the practice myself, I found that most classes available in studios cater to more advanced students so I was instantly passionate about teaching a more accessible style of yoga. This became even more necessary when I (re)injured my shoulder early in my training. I couldn’t bear any weight in my right arm and nor lift my arm above chest-level. This made most yoga poses inaccessible to me and I had to learn to heavily modify my practice and to navigate the intense emotions I was feeling about being so limited. Because those early days of my own yoga practice were experienced through the lens of mental health struggles and physical injury, I have spent the last 10 years passionate about teaching yoga classes designed to soothe the nervous system and to be easily modified for people whose bodies need more care and a slower pace. You Can Yoga is part of my mission to make this amazing practice accessible for as many people as possible.
